In Cardiff North (held by Labour), Catherine Taylor-Dawson of Vote for Yourself Rainbow Dream Ticket wins just one vote - although she also stood in the three other Cardiff seats where she had more success (37 in Central, 79 in South, and 167 in West).
I wonder who the one was. It wasn't me! I was one of the 1936 people who voted for Plaid Cymru! The Tories were worrying close behind Labour, who have a majority 1146.
Ceredigion went LibDem unfortunately. I remember they were hoping for that last time. My flatmate was a member and thought I was very odd for supporting Plaid. I blame the bloody English students. So many English people do not understand Celtic nationalism and think it dreadful (and right wing) when in fact it's Socialist and all it's doing is asserting our right to rule ourselves. It's not about saying 'we're the best' but about saying 'we're as good as you and can and should rule ourselves'. Plaid is pretty much the opposite of UKIP (who want to leave Europe and end devolution).

Date: 2005-05-06 06:36 pm (UTC)Also, while I haven't been keeping up much with Welsh politics, I know that my brother has been less impressed with Plaid in recent years and wasn't intending to vote for them (whether he did or not I don't know).

Date: 2005-05-06 09:42 pm (UTC)This makes more sense of the by-election timing in 2000 when there was a furore that Cynog moved the writ very quickly and so got the by-election in a fortnight or so before the new roll came in* with the result that the freshers weren't on it and the previous years' thirds years were still on it but weren't around thus the student vote was diminished. Of course, I was in the weird position of not being disenfranchised by this as I was on the old roll but not the new because of having been in Galway on Oct 15th and so had not been eligible!
*The rolling roll was brought in just after this!

Date: 2005-05-08 10:24 pm (UTC)Aah. Not having been in Wales much of late I've missed that of Plaid. I think it's a problem that a lot of parties have and I still think they're better than the other options because I can actually agree with them!
