In Cardiff North (held by Labour), Catherine Taylor-Dawson of Vote for Yourself Rainbow Dream Ticket wins just one vote - although she also stood in the three other Cardiff seats where she had more success (37 in Central, 79 in South, and 167 in West).

I wonder who the one was. It wasn't me! I was one of the 1936 people who voted for Plaid Cymru! The Tories were worrying close behind Labour, who have a majority 1146.

Ceredigion went LibDem unfortunately. I remember they were hoping for that last time. My flatmate was a member and thought I was very odd for supporting Plaid. I blame the bloody English students. So many English people do not understand Celtic nationalism and think it dreadful (and right wing) when in fact it's Socialist and all it's doing is asserting our right to rule ourselves. It's not about saying 'we're the best' but about saying 'we're as good as you and can and should rule ourselves'. Plaid is pretty much the opposite of UKIP (who want to leave Europe and end devolution).

*nod* I used to be a member of the SNP, and still support independence - I left over an apparent sea-change in their attitude to gay rights.

Ceredigion was Lib Dem for a long time (when Lord Geraint (RIP) was MP) before it went Plaid. Much as I would have voted Plaid, I don't think it is that surprising, and I don't think it was Plaid long enough to be a real Plaid heartland.

Also, while I haven't been keeping up much with Welsh politics, I know that my brother has been less impressed with Plaid in recent years and wasn't intending to vote for them (whether he did or not I don't know).

I understand also that the Lid Dem returned is a member of Countryside Alliance and doesn't even live in the constituency. My parents seem quite disheartened.

What has caused him to be less impressed with Plaid? I know Kevin feels that they play up their socialism in the South but are almost Tory in some of their rural heartlands. I admit I didn't get round to manifesto reading this time. To be quite honest, I really couldn't be bothered. The fact that I didn't want to stay up says a lot really. I remember 1997 being up 'til 4am and even 2001, I stayed up fairly late with my LibDem housemate! It was probably her TV because I think Lauren had gone home by then so although it usually her TV in the kitchen (because otherwise she watched it too much)* it must have been Abbey's on that occasion.

*It's presence in the kitchen resulted in me watching it too much!

Not living in th consistuency is bad. The Countryside Alliance card seems to have worked -- that'd bring out the farmers' vote and amongst the students (both in Aber and Lampeter) LibDem was likely to be popular.

This makes more sense of the by-election timing in 2000 when there was a furore that Cynog moved the writ very quickly and so got the by-election in a fortnight or so before the new roll came in* with the result that the freshers weren't on it and the previous years' thirds years were still on it but weren't around thus the student vote was diminished. Of course, I was in the weird position of not being disenfranchised by this as I was on the old roll but not the new because of having been in Galway on Oct 15th and so had not been eligible!

*The rolling roll was brought in just after this!

I think he has found them to have become too wrapped up in their own internal workings. Beyond that, I'm not certain enough to say really. You'd have to ask him!

*It's presence in the kitchen resulted in me watching it too much!

Tsk, tsk.

Wps. I read that tsk tsk as being about having watched too much telly to start with and then I saw it! Not paying attention!

Aah. Not having been in Wales much of late I've missed that of Plaid. I think it's a problem that a lot of parties have and I still think they're better than the other options because I can actually agree with them!
