Boiler advice
Nov. 29th, 2010 02:12 pmWe're on prepay gas and electric meters. Gas ran out earlier today.
I went and got more on the card, transferred it to the meter and put the gas back on. I reset the boiler (noticing that pressure was just under 2 bar) and the cooker and the radiators worked for a while. But now radiators are cold and when I checked the boiler just now pressure has dropped completely and so it's gone off.
In my old place, the pressure dropped gradually and I'd occasionally have to open the water valve and top it up. But I'm worried now because it has dropped pressure so suddenly.
Any suggestions as to what I should do? Other than curl up under the duvet on the sofa to keep warm?

Date: 2010-11-29 03:36 pm (UTC)Failing a source of less pressure from air being removed from the system many boilers will have some form of balloon or vessel which will moderate pressure if it gets to high and release the excess. These are very prone to breakage and if e.g. the diaphragm in the middle (for some designs) breaks it can just release pressure anyway. It often fails when it's been off for a while and then the boiler restarts.
I don't think you can cause much issues by refilling the boiler at least once so I would suggest:
1)bleed radiators, if no air present go to 4)
2)repressurise
3)if it depressurises then assume result of 1)
4)repressurise
5)if it looses pressure again contact competent boiler person and say that you think it might be the pressure relieve valve blown in some way.
What type of boiler is it anyway?
