Anyone know about the rules about GP practice catchment areas?

Not for certain, but I think you can register anywhere you like. The practice may be allowed to turn you down if they want though, so I imagine if you tried to register somewhere ridiculous without a good reason they might not let you.

The fact you're asking the question makes me think you might know better though.
