The telephone code for Cardiff is 029 followed by an 8-digit number beginning 20. 02920 is not the code. This is demonstrated that to dial numbers within Cardiff one needs to use the 8 digit number beginning 20.

Similarly, the code for London is 020, with the old 0171 numbers having an 8-digit number beginning 7 and the old 0181 numbers having an 8-digit number beginning 8.

How complicated can this be?

Heck, my parents' number when they bought the house was three digits long (nnn), and now it's 01462 xxxnnn. It doesn't mean that their phone number is still nnn.

my aunt still answers her phone "Dawes Green 212" :-)

we have the three-digit code thing here in Southampton too. It confused me for a while, especially as 023 80.... invariably refers to Southampton, 023 92... to Portsmouth, etc.

Our phone number was three digits when I was growing up. I miss those days...

[grins] I obviously lived in a bigger place the you, as I've never known fewer than 4 and when we moved at 7 the new one was 5. I think the first went to 6 before we did though.

London is slightly complicated by the various kinds of short forms you can use in some parts, which leads to the rather strange:

020 7 111 22 33

form that you see in many places.
