I came across a very interesting job advert today. I could do all the things which they ask, but they list `clean driving license and use of a car' in their necessary qualities. However, nothing in the duties lists seems to me to require a car. As someone who doesn't have a full driving license, this is rather frustrating and I was wondering what the rules about requiring driving licenses are.

The job is at Yr Academi which promotes Welsh literature. The job details (in Welsh) can be found by going to the Welsh version of the homepage and clicking on the news story which is about opportunities. Oddly when I tried to put in a direct link to the it by getting the link address and posting Details here in Welsh, when I followed the link I ended up at a page in English (which is the third story down on the English version of the homepage). Very odd website management!

The details of the permanent one talk about projects and development all over Wales, which would be the reason that a clean driving licence and use of a car would be required on that one. It may well be that the temporary one would have to provide support/whatever to such events. Also they may regard it a necessary part of what they would want the person to do on the Maes. I haven't a clue what the rules about requiring driving licences are though.

[You may want to fix the first link.]

On the Eisteddfod, I have never arrived at the prif faes in a car. I have on a few occasions got to maes B in a car. There are usually good shuttle buses run by the Eisteddfod. My argument is that if it's not daily travelling between several sites (sufficiently far apart that cycling is not sensible) but travelling up to meetings around the country it ought to be possible to do that by public transport. If it is possible to do it by train then doing so is advantageous because you can do other work while you travel. Busses are more problematic, but you could argue safety, as you wouldn't be driving when tired. There is also the environmental arguments about avoiding the use of cars.

This is Wales we're talking about... public transport is not exactly our strong suit. Suppose you were expected to be in Aber, for example, for the day, which is almost impossible by public transport, but perfectly feasible by car.

Admittedly Wales is more awkward than England for public transport but it is possible to do Cardiff--Aber by train in a day. Admittedly it takes 4 hours going rather than 2.5 by car but I could be there for 11.23. Actually Transport Direct tells me 3 and 1/4 for car. What's happened to the TrawsCambria by the way?

I don't know. You could also contact them and ask, and would they consider someone eager who thought they could get about easily? Unless you're going to pass your test very soon, you wouldn't lose anything, and I think it's a reasonable question -- lots of people posting job ads but haven't thought of everything.
