Further to my post just before St Mark's day* I had similar issues with Corpus Christi.
St Martin's Roath answered an email promptly but told me although they had Mass at 7pm they were falling into the nasty modern habit of transferring the procession to the Sunday. I thoroughly disapprove of this. Our faith is not just for Sundays. St Germans still weren't telling me anything and I'd got no response to my filling in of their contact form on the site last time. St Saviour's web-page had vanished, so from their vicarage postcode I identified three churches that it might be. So yesterday I went on an explore. I found St Martin's which was locked and not telling me about services other than regular ones (but I did at least know). St Germans (when I found it having been mislead by St James the Great and Trinity Methodist (which has a spire)) told me their Sunday services outside and told me to see a notice inside for weekday services. I thought very helpful if it's locked. It wasn't; well not entirely. The outside door was open leading to a space with two notice boards and glass doors. These were locked (in case of vandalism) but you could see the splendid interior. On one noticeboard was a letter about Credu Cymru (Forward in Faith Wales)'s events and on the other was a sheet giving daily mass times. This said to see the weekly notices for details of services for festivals and saints. This was unhelpful as though I could see a pile which might be them on the tale inside, I couldn't get at them. I then proceeded to get lost in Splott (I didn't go far enough East) and so ended up turning right at a big roundabout and cycling on a couple of bits of dual carriageway. I didn't find any churches.
So last night, I noted down the vicar's phone number for St German's and phoned this morning. As I phoned about 40 mins after the start of the morning Mass I wasn't surprised to get the answerphone, the message of which amused me (something like `This is Fr Roy of St German's church, at least, I am unable to take your call so this is the BT answering service, if you don't like answerphones try again later or you can leave a message after the tone). I did leave a message, as I'd anticipated an answerphone I'd had time to plan what to say. Fair play to him, he phoned back in just over an hour. He timed it well actually as I was still in the stairwell of the library so didn't get into trouble for not having silenced the phone. He told me that mass was at 7 and that they were processing. This saved me from a second expedition to find St Saviour's.
I went to Mass. It was disappointingly empty (I think 15 in a Church that seats 700). The first hymn was hard work as it felt like I was singing solo (as a soprano, as I'm neither a soprano or a soloist this was hard work). After that the singing was fine, I think they just didn't know `We hail the presence glorious'.
It was a good service. Only a Sung Mass and lacking acolytes, but well done. A couple of places could have done with better word provision -- we sang `Blessed are you Lord God of all creation ... Blessed be God for ever' and the words were not quite those on the sheet. I correctly picked up we were going to repeat `Blessed be God' three times before the `for ever' and could work out the words for wine by analogy (so through his goodness had become `thanks to his goodness'). The mass setting was familiar in places (Sanctus, Agnus Dei) but unfamiliar in others (Kyrie). The smoke was great during the Eucharistic prayer and there was silence at its end. West-facingg, but it didn't look too bad. I did think that we could all have sat in the choirstalls!
We processed in a figure-of-eight round the church to the lady Chapel where we had Benediction for which we had no books. I struggled with the Anima Christi because although it's on the cards at LSM, I don't think I've ever been present for its use. They didn't to the Divine Praises as congregation repeats each after the priest either which was a bit awkward especially as it was slightly different from LSMs (more Marian phrases -- Immaculate Conception and Glorious Assumption--** and St Joseph her spouse most chaste, not her most Chaste spouse). As for Psalm 117, it fell apart because no-one could remember more than the first verse. We let rip with `Blessed be Jesus Christ in the most holy sacrament' to make up for it though.
*Scarily if one googles for St Saviour's Splott now that post appears on the front page. Their site also comes up as first hit now, but it's broken!
**I'd had an argument with mum this morning about perpetual virginity from a Corpus Christi service where that had been said. Now, I can cope with `ever-virgin' because I can argue both ways from Scripture and it appears to have been undisputed until at least the 18th Century. Mum is vehemently anti (because it gives an unhealthy view of sex). However, I struggle with `Immaculate Conception' because it's not promulgated until the 19th Century and the Orthodox don't hold it and I don't think it makes sense, both demeaning Our Lady's response (although Ricardus had an interesting point about conuscpience (sp?) on the ship recently) and why Holy Annie, God's Granny didn't have be immaculately conceived for our Lady to be (and so on ad infinitum).

Date: 2006-06-16 06:22 pm (UTC)I had to miss the big diocesan festival back home (Sarum rite Missal mass with subdeacon in a humeral veil to hide the paten during the canon, with procession and Benediction) but I at least got to go to Benediction.
Mind if I add you?
