The Shack

While doing my Christmas shopping I spotted The Shack and succumbed to temptation and bought it. I'd heard interesting things about it and so wanted to read it for myself.

I started it on Christmas Eve and finished today. It's good. I wanted to blog about it though being perverse the suggestion one does this at the end nearly made me change my mind.

It's basically theodicy but has a wonderful depiction of God. At one point the trinitarian theology was a bit dodgy, but Trinitarian theology is notoriously dodgy.

I've got lots of post it index tabs in bits I might go back to.

I will also consider this review from a ConEvo stand point which warns of the dangers of the misleading theology of the book. I've not read it yet, but I will.

Tim Challies has just one of many (Reformed Evangelical) viewpoints (and it's worth noting that Challies is known for writing in a very black and white way). I know Christians (including one respected church leader) with similar theology who liked it.

I thought there were positive things about the book, although I'm not sure why everyone is raving about it - I didn't think it was particularly well written (like say, Harry Potter, which I thought was good but not worth raving about) or that it presented very good answers (compared to say someone like Lewis or many other more modern apologists).

For me I thought the doctrinal errors in the book (which are, I think, far more wide ranging than just how the trinity is depicted - Challies and others have expanded on those) were serious. Perhaps I'm overreacting, but then again... "Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers." (1 Timothy 4:16)
