yrieithydd: A photo of a stained glass window from Taize. Mary and Elizabeth meet. There is a faint image of John the Baptist and Jesus in their words. (Visitation)

Those who remember my rant a year ago* might be pleased to know that I do not feel the need to rant about this year's Advent Carols.

The order was:

Isaiah 58:5-9

O Come, O Come Emmanuael
Canticle of the Coming of Christ (Revelation 21:7-22) said antiphonally.

(Candles Extinguished)

Adam Lay y-bounden

Micah 5:2-4

Jesus Christ the Apple Tree

Luke 1:26-38

The Angel Gabriel from heaven came

Luke 2:1-7

Britten's Hymn to the Virgin

Luke 2:8-20

Unto us is born a son

Liberty for Captives: Ted Schimdt

A Spotless Rose is blowing (Howells)

Eternal God,
Made known to us in Jesus
Who was, and is and is to come,
Make us ready to greet you.
Teach us to read the Scriptures,
To trust the promise of the prophets,
To heed the warning of John the Baptist,
To recieve into ourselves like Mary,
These things we ask through the same Jesus Christ our Lord
who lives and reights with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit
One God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O Come, all ye faithful

In dulci jubilo

Sermon

Hark! the Hearld angels sing

Closing responses.

We had the right words (i.e. the translation in AMNS not NEH and not as mangled by Rejoice and Sing)** for O Come, O Come in the order: Emmanual; Wisdom; Rod of Jesse; Dayspring; Key of David; Lord of might; Root of Jesse's tree; Desire of nations; Emmanuael.)

Yay for the wonderful logic of Adam Lay y-bounden!*** I know evangelicals will be riled by the idea of Our Lady as heaven's queen, but I do like the underlying idea that after we sinned God didn't just make it better, but he made it Better. That is, he didn't just make it better as in how it was before (as in you get better from being ill) but actually built something more glorious (here epitomised by our Lady being queen of heaven) in its place. I know some**** argue that the Incarnation would have happened even without the Fall, but I'm not convinced.

One of the readings was supposed to be by one of the sopranos, but her boyfriend (a tenor) appeared instead. It turned out that she'd been given the same reading as the Master and didn't want to risk not being able to find the right one in the lectern Bible, so he went instead (and took a while to get ot the right place)

The soprano in the semi-chorus for the Hymn to the Virgin was very operatic. I didn't ask Tim what he made of that or Adam lay y-bounden.

Again it was the right version of 'Unto us is born a son' i.e. the one with 'and slew the little childer and slew the little childer'. I think Ali, Charles and Mark thought I was odd for enjoying that line. It also led into a discussion of why the men get the macho lines and the women the saccharine ones!

Liberty for Captives was an interesting reading and pointed forward to Good Friday at the end.

There were some interesting typos. I only noticed use for us when copytyping the prayer just now but we had always not alway in In dulci jubilo (to rhyme with parvule!) and Per nostra criminal. I suspect Word of being `helpful'!

The main lack was intercessions.

Yes, it got Christmassy, but I think it was a reasonable compromise of the competing expectations for the service. It's a pity we didn't have Lo he Comes as it makes a great climax to the service. I remember in my first year we had a similar compromise and finished with that which works well I think, because it leaves us looking to the second coming having meditated on the first. But I'm not too sad, because we had it this morning!

*Liturgically at least
**You can't sing mankind!
***I love mediæval logic. We went to Cambridge Illuminations yesterday (at least the part in the Fitz). It was wonderful and I should post more about it, but there was an illustration of the Risen Christ with a Spade. The logic appears to me, Mary mistakes him for the Gardener so he must have a spade!
****I remember discussing that in the St Thomas group but can't remember which side he was on.
